Boredom Buster - It’s Dressing Up Play Time!

Boredom Buster blog post from Karnival CostumesClown Logo of Karnival Costumes your Halloween specialists for Fancy Dress and Costume AccessoriesWe all know that every child loves the chance to play dress up and it’s acknowledged as offering powerful interactive learning opportunities in both the classroom and the home and nowadays, these are being widely exploited by the savvy parent s well as the teacher. But children don’t know about this, they just like we used to, just love to dress up and whether they are pretending to be a queen or princess, or they are transforming themselves into an astronaut on the verge of entering the space race, children just love letting their imagination run wild during their character role play.

So how can we help them to achieve this level of enjoyment where a rainy afternoon can pass in a flash and cries of “I’m bored” can be replaced with giggles and laughter? Well, the first, and perhaps most obvious step, is to establish a collection of dressing up clothes. For most households this will be a mix of hand-me-downs and purchased costumes and accessories. Hand me downs are perfect as they are no longer needed and can be readily altered or changed to fit your own child. Some of the best for little girls are old bridesmaid dresses and outfits.

Another great idea is to ensure that all of the costumes and accessories you buy for school dress up days during Bookweek and other core curriculum subject days make it home and get added to your own collection rather than the school bin.  You could also look out for reduced prices on out of season Halloween fancy dress and other items as a lot of these can be used year round as dress up clothes and accessories. At Karnival Costumes we’ve a huge collection of children’s fancy dress costumes and accessories, most at reduced prices which will be perfect for dressing up play!

So now you’ve started to gather a collection of dressing up clothes and costume accessories, but this is only really half the battle. To really spark your child’s imagination (as well as giving them a few extra ideas) you’ll need the perfect place where you can store all of your child’s dressing up clothes and accessories. It’s possible to buy some very expensive storage chests which will work fine and which will definitely look the part but alas, most of us can’t afford that solution. So why not create a unique, one of a kind storage chest from items that you can find either already in the home or that you can probably find locally relatively inexpensively.

Perhaps an old dresser, bedroom unit or even an old suitcase will do the trick. These can be inexpensively brought back to life by adding a fresh coat of paint or adding the odd piece of fabric here and there. You could even personalise it with your child’s name.  Get your child or children to join in and they will get the joy of using something that they helped to create. They’ll tell you exactly what they want, in what colours and with what embellishments, so take their advice. The end result will be something that not only fits the bill but something which also brings back some happy family memories.
