Build a Spooktacular Halloween Graveyard this year!

What would make a better Halloween backdrop than your own spooky and haunted graveyard scene? And with little effort you can create a graveyard that even Gomez Addams and Uncle Fester would be proud to be seen walking around. It’s all so easy using readily available Halloween props and other items.

And with Halloween fast approaching now is the time to start planning your own spooky Halloween graveyard scene. They are the perfect backdrop to a planned party and they are a great way to entertain any trick or treaters that may come to visit.

Now it’s your graveyard so therefore it’s your choice but the first consideration and probably the most important question to ask is; whether it’s to be a super scary fright scene or something simpler and purely entertaining for the whole family including youngsters.

Actually building the graveyard scene can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make it but this is definitely a task that benefits from some forward planning and at least a sketch of what you are planning to achieve.

Some of the major planning considerations should be access, avoiding tripping hazards and perspective. The perspective of the site is important as if everything is the same height and in a 10ft area, it will look false but adding some smaller pieces to the back of the scene will make it look like a deeper and therefore more realistic scene.

Having decided on the overall theme; modern or old western Boot Hill cemetery etc, the next aspect for the planning process is to finalise on the area to be used and get the dimensions and any other important information. Again these should include issues like; will you be allowing people to walk through the area, does it have power for lighting or will you rely on candles and battery powered lanterns – remember with naked flames you’ll want to maintain a safe distance (and them some more) so that there is no risk to any visitor catching a flame with any clothing or costume accessories.

Another major consideration is that of allowing people be able to reach your props, if they can or it’s being left unattended – in which case we would strongly recommend that there are no naked flames or tealight candles in pumpkins anywhere - you may want to consider how you will fix these elements.

Mortuary Sign for Halloween Graveyards and CemeteriesHaving decided on the area, you should allow the grass to grow as much as you put up with as no spooky graveyard will benefit from looking like it’s been set on a neatly mown lawn. Unless, that is, you’re making the house look like a Mortuary – and we’ve the perfect Cemetery sign for that! If you are planning on using candles or Jack 'O Lanterns then you will need to be able to get to these and either relight or replace them during the evening. If using pumpkins, try cutting the whole in the bottom so they can be lifted off and the tealight candle replaced that way, it's a lot quicker than attempting to replace one through the top.

You will also need some time to find some gravestones and other props for your graveyard and the internet is a great source for these. There are some realistic looking gravestones available and these range in size from mini gravestones at less than foot tall and used primarily to decorate buffet tables and party areas, to the very realistic being between two and three feet tall. Newer designs are now available with battery powered integrated electronic eyes and sound cards and these are usually activated by sound although some can be connected to pressure mats.

Imitation gravestones are cast using expanded foam that is coated to be very realistic with all the appearance of age adding to the atmosphere of your graveyard. Almost all come with an integrated stand which will work both on soft surfaces as well as on paving, although these usually require a little extra weight to be added is it’s breezy. Once positioned, they can be enhanced by either adding small amounts of earth around the point where they touch the earth or by piling small amounts of either real or artificial leaves and other wind blown materials. You don't need to add a huge amount, just enough to make it look like they've been in place for a time.

A light covering of leaves throughout the graveyard scene also works well. Remember that little piles of windblown leaves can add significantly to the eeriness of the scene. Add a couple of dead fallen branches in areas where they will not form a tripping hazard to add to the eerie feel.  If they are fresh cut, paint the sawn end with brown or dark paint to disguise it.

Another useful tip is to tilt some of the gravestones at odd angles to add to the appearance that the graveyard has been there for  centuries and you could even break and lie a couple down to make it look like they have fallen over – use grey or matched water based paint to seal and disguise the broken edges. Again use leaves and small amounts of earth to blend them in with the surrounding area. Use your own imagination to create smashed stones and never throw any away that get damaged, you’re sure to be able to use them somewhere. One of the best decorating products for your graveyard is compressed moss which swells up in water and which can be wired onto your stones or simply used around the base. If gluing it on dry, it can be lightly painted to really give it the aged look.

Some of the best graveyard scenes are created in areas where there are a few tree branches which can be used to hang the odd length of cloth streamer from to catch in any breeze - these look best when they drift into any light occasionally rather than are permanently lit from below.

If you want to add instant effect to the front of the graveyard you can add a small white picket fence line, complete with the odd missing or broken picket and onto which you can attach fake barbed wire. This looks best aged and if you’re making your own, and it should only cost a few pounds for each length, try painting it grey and then white as this will allow you to rub back the white to create a more aged look. Halloween prop barbed wire is available in lengths of plain wire in brown (rusted) or silver (new) and it’s harmless to the touch.

The keywords are; plan your design on paper and start collecting your props as early as you can and when it's over, if you take care of the collected items they will last you for years allowing you to grow your scene each year that passes. And that's half the fun, as even before you finish with this years display, you’ll be thinking of ways of how you can improve it for next year.
