Every year, Dahlicious Dress Up raises lots of cash for the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children’s Charity. This year’s Dahlicious Dress Up Day will be taking place on September 25th (2015) and it’s a time when schools and workplaces around the UK will be awash with the famous characters from Roald Dahl’s masterpieces of entertaining literature and all in aid of a great cause.

According to the official Roald Dahl website, http://www.roalddahl.com the charity aims to raise money to “ensure that children in the UK living with serious, rare and undiagnosed conditions have the chance to have a childhood full of marvellous mischief”.

In our previous blogs, we have concentrated on costumes and dress up ideas for children – and hay, we make no apologies for that, but it’s true, other than in passing, we’ve kind of neglected to provide any ideas to help adults get ready for the day.

Now we all know that grown ups shouldn’t be exempt from the fun of dressing up as a Roald Dahl character for the Dahlicious Dress Up Day. So whether you work in a school and you want to join in with your pupils, or you’re planning on having a sponsored Dahlicious Dress Up Day in your workplace, let’s look at some of the costume ideas that you could use.  And for those wanting more details on how to organise a Roald Dahl Dahlicious Dress Up Day, visit the website site where you can “Register for Dahlicious” and get bags of useful hints and tips, including sponsorship forms and advertising materials for your own event.

Popular Roald Dahl Dress Up Characters

Willy Wonka (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

At Karnival Costumes we’ve a number of ready assembled costumes for the sweet toothed Willy Wonka character, but if you fancy something more hands on, then a hat and cane, accompanied by a purple coat or jacket plus a floppy bow tie or cravat will instantly transform you into the wonderful Mr Wonka. And with a few Golden Tickets (images from the internet or make your own) you're be all set, just remember you don’t actually own a sweet factory so don’t go offering tours, on the other hand, if you do own one, well, knock yourself out!

Oompa-Loompa (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

Well, like most of us you’ve probably got the song running around inside your head already! And if you haven’t then join the rest of us…altogether now! “Oompa-Loompa do-ba-dee-doo, if you want to impress then here's what to do!” For most, the classic Oompa-Loompa look was from the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory film starring Gene Wilder. With either a shop bought costume or white trousers, white braces and brown top, add a green wig and orange face paint and finish it all off with a pair of white gloves.

The Big Friendly Giant (The BFG)

An especially good choice if you are tall and like the slightly unkempt look, the BFG will be a great character dress up choice for you. As well as the all important Giant Ears, you’ll need a white shirt, green or brown trousers, open tweed waistcoat and a pair of sandals.

Grand High Witch (The Witches)

A quick rummage through your left over Halloween costumes and you should be able to find something suitable, if not then long black clothes and a pointy witch’s nose will do the trick. You can finish the look off with a pair of gloves, Halloween wig and square-toed shoes or witch over-shoes to achieve the ultimate Roald Dahl witch look.

Miss Trunchbull (Matilda)

This is the perfect outfit for the disciplinarian in you as the character of Miss Trunchball is definitely a scary one for the children! You’ll either need a wig or you’ll need to wear your hair tied up into a bun.  Wear a brown smock or large shirt with a belt and carry a riding crop with you. Add lots of blusher to the cheeks to achieve the 'red with rage' look!

Forgot to get a Costume Together!

Okay, we all lead busy lives and we know that some of you will have plain forgotten to get a costume together for the day and with our same day shipping and next day delivery, boy you really have left it to the last minute! Don’t run around in a flat PANIC, just remember that Roald Dahl's favourite colour was yellow. Everyone will suspect that you forgot, but at least they won’t know for certain and when it comes to dressing up for Dahlicious Day and raising money for children, who really cares what you wear, just join in.
