Across England, Germany and some other Christian countries adults and children, though primarily the children, rolled eggs down hills on Easter morning in a game which is said to have its origins connected to the rolling away of the rock from the front of the tomb of Jesus Christ before the Resurrection.

It’s said that with the opening of the trade routes these European settlers spread the custom around the globe and especially into the New World. In the main it remained a local pastime and was enjoyed in small groups of family and friends.

Deluxe Chicken Costume for Adults Ref: AJ009265The popularity of Easter Egg Rolling was really given a shove by Dolly Madison, said by some to have earned the title of the Queen of Egg Rolling. Wife of the fourth President of the United States of America, in the early nineteenth century, she organised an Egg Roll on the hilly lawns of the new Capital Building. For over sixty years the lawns saw hundreds of children with their decorated Easter Eggs taking part in the fun and games. It was subsequently moved from there when a new lawn was laid and a subsequent Congressional Act was passed that made it illegal for the Capital Building lawns to be used as a children’s playground!

In 1880, the First Lady invited children to the White House for the Egg Roll and apart from times of war, it has been held there ever since. The event has grown, and today Easter Monday is the only day of the year when tourists are allowed to wander over the White House lawn. The event is sponsored by the wife of the President for the children of the entire country. Frequently, the President can be seen, along with the Easter Bunny, who for the day is perhaps the more important person at the event, watching children push their eggs over the lawns using wooden spoons. The event is open to children aged twelve years and under and adults are only allowed in when accompanied by children!

And if rolling a hard-boiled egg down a hill seems like too much hard work on a Bank Holiday, how about a bit of ‘egg jarping’ which represents all that is good about British egg-centricity. It’s a little like playing conkers, with players tapping their opponents' eggs with their own until one of them breaks. Okay, not as well known as Easter Egg Rolling or the traditional Easter Egg Hunt, but it’s far messier and we just know that that fact alone will make it very appealing to some!
