Halloween Ghosting Prank

There’s a brand new Halloween craze that’s sweeping across North America and there is evidence that it’s reached some parts of the UK as well as other European countries. Although in some places it’s known as “Boo-ing” we think that the name Ghosting is more apt. But by either name, the basic concept and idea of this super Halloween prank are the same. And for once, it's a nice harmless prank that's simple to understand and that doesn't take a massifve amount of time to prepare for!

So if you’re looking for a way of spreading a little of the Halloween spirit around your own friends and neighbourhood as well as extending the excitement of the time, then it’s easy to see why Ghosting is proving such a phenomenon. The first activity should start during early October so that there is sufficient time for the process to spread and for your entire neighbourhood to be “ghosted”.

For the prank to succeed you’ll need to “ghost” a couple of houses and to complete this for this you’ll need the following items for each:

*  A Halloween goodie bag containing a few Halloween treats
*  A picture of a ghost or paper cut out ghost shape
*  A note informing the householder stating “you’ve been ghosted” and containing simple instructions on how to carry on the tradition – see our example below

Once you have everything you need, ghosts, letters and goodie bags of treats, you need to select your houses carefully, we would suggest that you pick households where they are likely to continue the tradition and then deliver them in secret by leaving the bag on the doorstep, ringing the doorbell and running away. So you get to play ‘knock down ginger’ as well!  The trick is not to get caught.  Please ensure that children are suitably supervised.

Letter and Instructions

You can compose your own letter and either write it out by hand or use a spooky font found on your computer. It should include the instructions for keeping the process going and it must include that two more households need to be “ghosted” within two days in the same manner.

Along with the Halloween goodies and letter you need to leave a picture of a ghost or even better a cut out ghost shape which your instructions should explain should be left on the door to show that this house has already been Ghosted!

We found this super poem which explains all:

You’ve Been Ghosted

Late last night, we left a treat. The tradition is fun, one we hope you’ll repeat.
Take a ghost and pin it to your door, to let others know, you need ghosting no more.
Now it’s your duty to pass on the surprise, to two more families, we must advise.
Gather some treats and deliver them soon, within two nights, under the light of the moon.
Include a ghost with package you give, along with this poem for the tradition to live.

Now you could undertake this task in a ninja fashion and not be seen or you could wear your Halloween trick or treating costume early so that if anyone does spot you, you’ll have the added advantage of spooking them out even before All Hallows Eve!
