Hawaiian Fancy Dress - 5 Ideas to Make Your Luau Party Successful

During the summer months, one of the most popular themes for costume parties around the country is Hawaiian fancy dress. The traditional Hawaiian party or Luau is really an obvious theme for a summer barbecue party because outfits are relatively cheap to buy, when compared to other dressing up costume themes, your guests are more than likely going to join in the fun and dress up for the occasion.

If you are hosting a Hawaiian fancy dress party for the first time, it may seem a little daunting at the outset, but it needn’t be. There are now so many reasonably priced Hawaii themed accessories available that it is relatively simple to transform your back garden or patio area into a Luau Party area that everyone will admire and enjoy.

So if you still need some inspiration, here are 5 ideas that you may make the decision easier as you consider organising your own Hawaiian Luau barbecue this summer.

Sending out themed invitations
For most people this is where the party begins. By spending jus a little time and effort you can really convey the fact that this is to be a well planned and executed party. You should try and get your guests into the Luau mood right from the off by sending out Hawaii themed invitations. You can of course buy a set of cards from a specialist Hawaiian fancy dress site, but this is perhaps something that you can make yourself. Remember, they should be fun and bright, with your character shining through, but most importantly they should include all the important party details. And how about using the message in a bottle trick, again these can be bought or you can make them yourself by using a cork on the open end. Don’t forget to tell your guests that they are expected in suitable Hawaiian costume.

Decorate the Luau party area
You can now purchase large ‘scene setters’ which do just that. Fix them to a wall or fence and they instantly cerate the look of a beach scene or that of a tropical island. These scene setters really are effective in transforming a room or an area and so are well worth the money. Compliment the scene setter with an array of other Hawaii decorations, such as Leis sets, tropical themed pinatas, tiki totem poles and even life sized Hawaiian dancer cutouts. Set yourself a budget for the party decorations before you start purchasing them as it’s easy to get carried away once you’ve seen some of the great stuff on the market!

Decorate the table
Obviously the food will be the key to holding a successful and memorable barbecue and so it makes sense that the designated area where your guests are going to sit down and eat the food is decorated appropriately. However, don’t be tempted to go too far, save the money you could have spent on buying tropical paper plates and cups and invest it perhaps in table decorations or even a decorated Hawaiian raffia table skirting for a more authentic look.

Create the centre of attention or focal point
Any party needs a focal point of some kind, with weddings it’s usually the cake or present table with money tree, for your Hawaiian party it’s no different and although creating the focal point will probably be the most expensive element of your decoration, it will be the piece that binds the rest of the decoration theme together. The most popular focal point for luau parties is the inflatable palm tree. If you can, set it among an area of sand so that it looks part of the beach and then you can decorate around the bottom as well. There is now perhaps an equally popular alternative, the inflatable palm tree drinks cooler, with other beach party designs also being available. These are not only cool - in more ways than one - they are extremely practical as well especially in smaller party areas.

Party gifts
It is always a good idea to give your guests a little memento or gift that they can take from your party however, the Hawaiian tradition is to greet each guest with the gift of a Hawaiian Lei or flower garland. These can be purchased beforehand and as well as being a nice gesture, they will also ensure that everyone looks the part!
