International Talk Like a Pirate Day is Party Time!

Almost as popular as the Christmas holiday, September’s Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated by, er, lots of people and it’s attraction is growing year on year. So we say; “Argh me hearties!"

Another chance to dress like a pirate, talk like a pirate and generally behave like a pirate – and you know what they say about looking like a duck and sounding like a duck! So this, and every September 19th take the chance to become a pirate on ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’. So if you want to know the background details check out what’s its about when it is, why it is and what to do for it, keep reading!

The celebration originates from June 1995 (nearly thirty years ago!) and was the innovation of Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy (formally known as John Baur and Mark Summers) who sat down and decided to start the holiday as a fun way to dress up as pirates and talk like them too! And today, the same principle of dressing like and talking like a pirate still reigns. Though originally started in June of 1995, Talk Like a Pirate Day is now held on Wednesday 19th September the move being prompted in reverence to D-Day having been 6th June.

Here’s a few sample expressions that maybe useful for you;

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh! – I’m so bored!
Ahoy, Matey – Hi, friend
Avast ye – Listen up
Booty – Treasure
Heave Ho – Give it some elbow grease
Lad, lass, lassie – A younger person
Pieces of eight – Money
Poop deck – Back of the ship
Scurvy dog – A mild insult
Shiver me timbers! – Sh*t!
Thar she blows! – I see a whale
Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen! – Let’s get out of here

If you want more, we’d encourage you to keep this pirate quote generator close to hand, which offers such helpful sentences as “I care not for a stinkin’ sea monkey. Just be givin’ me the’ powder chest!” and “Have ye plank?”

Although these are useful expressions for a general party, if you’re looking for some romancing on the high seas this Talk Like A Pirate Day, how about using some of the lines here on a list of suitable pick up lines, which will contain a line for most occasions, like “Come on up and see me urchins” and “Prepare to be boarded.” Definitely enough to shiver anyone's timbers...

Now once upon a time, a day like this would only have been enjoyed by children but pirate parties are actually now celebrated and enjoyed as much, if not more, by adults than by kids. Now in part, this may a have a lot to do with the grog ration and a certain Captain Morgan who gets shared a lot during the celebration! And early September is the perfect time to take to the water where various pirate craft (rafts) can race off against each other. So International Talk like a Pirate Day is the perfect excuse for getting all your friends together, grabbing a few fancy dress costumes and having a blooming good party!
