It's time to party on, and ....eat pancakes!!

Clown Logo of Karnival Costumes your Halloween specialists for Fancy Dress and Costume AccessoriesNow that the New Year has been rung in around the world, our thoughts are already turning towards Springtime and the celebration of Easter when our thoughts turn to the Christian story of the resurrection and to the natural miracles that surround us.
But before that we have the period of Lent which is the period of six and half weeks preceeding Easter which starts with Ash Wednesday the first day of the long fasting period for Christians. Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and it’s also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Tuesday.
Why Fat Tuesday? Well, it’s the day when historically people used up the foods that they aren't allowed during the period of Lent. And these foods include fat, butter and eggs, which leads us nicely to pancakes!
And the best bit is that we get a count down to Shrove Tuesday which starts on the preceeding Saturday which is known as Egg Saturday, Quinquagesima Sunday – the fifth Sunday before Easter and Callop Monday which is named after a “callop” which a slice or chunk of meat and traditionally was a day for eating eggs and bacon. And then to Shrove Tuesday, the day for eating any remaining foods that will be forbidden during the long Lenten season which begins on Ash Wednesday.
Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs. For a copy of our recipe for pancakes – click here. Shrove Tuesday is a day when people eat all they want of everything and anything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the period for fasting for Christians. Lent is also a time to give up something special that they enjoy so, Fat Tuesday is a celebration and the opportunity to enjoy that favorite food or snack that you are planning to give up for the period of Lent.
The eating of pancakes is not the only thing that happens on Shrove Tuesday in England. Pancake races are held all of the country where contestants have to run the course whilst flipping a pancake in a frying pan a pre-decided number of times. These are a test of both athletic ability as well as the skill in flipping and catching the pancake, which must be intact when the finishing line is reached.  Many of these races are held with the contestants wearing fancy dress with prizes for both winning the race and being the best dressed!
