Beer is one of the staple drinks around the world and we even celebrate it with its own day of recognition every June, although lots of people celebrate it whenever the opportunity arises! But what do we actually know about it? Not much we bet, so here at Karnival Costumes central we thought we’d share some interesting beer facts with you.

1. History
Beer, or more specifically, ale, is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the fifth millennium BC and recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

2. Zythology
Like everything else in this crazy world of ours, the study of beer and its making has a scientific name, although it sounds like somebody made it up after too much studying! Zythology, The focus of the study is the understanding of the role of its ingredients in the brewing process. So you’ve not been in the pub all night, you’ve been to Zythology class – yah!

3. Cenosillicaphobia
And whilst we talking about scientific names for things, if you’ve got a fear of an empty beer glass and let’s face it, most of us have, you could be suffering from cenosillicaphobia. Either seek urgent medical help and assistance at your doctor or with your nearest landlord!

4. Beer Varieties
There is an astonishing variety of beers on the market with hundreds of individual brews, not counting all those home brews. Belgium offers the most individual beer brands in the world.

5. The Most Expensive Beer
And it’s one of these Belgium beers that makes it to the top of the list as the most expensive beer in the world. Presently costing over £700 a bottle, this 12 litre bottle of 'La Vieille Bon Secours' takes two people just to pour it out! Needless to say it’s not available everywhere, with only one bar stocking it in London.

6. Good for You!
Good News! Beer might actually be good for you – as it contains all the nutrients you need for a healthy diet, as it is packed with protein, iron, fibre, calcium and vitamin B. Just remember to drink it in moderation!

7. Good Beer a Top Tip
If you want to get an idea as to the quality of your beer, simply tilt your beer glass. If the beer foam heads to the side and sticks, you’ve got yourself a top quality beer. This is called the ‘Brussels lace’ effect. Unfortunately you have to empty the glass of it contents before you can perform the test, shame that eh?

8. The Alcohol Percentage of Beer
Alcohol is the product of the fermentation process and is created through the reaction of the active yeast with the natural sugars. One way to find out the alcohol percentage of your beer is to check its density, by seeing how objects float in it. Breweries will use a device called the hydrometer to calculate the change in the density from the original state to the fully fermented product before identifying its alcohol percentage.

9. Frozen Beer
If you want to make your beer a little bit stronger, you should freeze it. That’s how the brewers BrewDog came up with some of the world’s strongest beers. In 2010, they produced a 55% ABV freeze-distilled beer called The End of History, which they marketed with the bottles packaged in small stuffed animals – well at that strength you’d probably not notice the last bit!

10. Guinness, Worth Waiting For?
Achieving the perfect pint of Guinness is not only an art it’s something you have to wait for! If you want to pour the perfect pint of Guinness, you need to let it rest for exactly 119.5 seconds between the first pour and the top up. This time period is called surge and settle, so go easy on the bartender the next time your pint of Guinness takes a while. It’s camera magic that allows them to get it done in the space of a 30 second TV commercial.

So there you are, some interesting, and some not quite so interesting, facts about beer which will have you talking knowledgably as you celebrate National Beer Day with your mates. And of course as the day wears on, the level of knowledge in any pub conversation diminishes proportionately with the alcohol consumed!
