Did you know that St. George has been the Patron Saint of England since 1415? And, although it’s not today, until the end of the 18th Century, St. George's Day was celebrated as a national holiday.  There are groups advocating that the holiday be reintroduced but with England prepared to spend more money on celebrating St Patrick’s Day rather than our own St George, it would seem that they are starting on the back foot!

April 23 was also an important day from England's very own William Shakespeare was both born on, or around, 23rd April in 1564 and died in on the same date in 1616. And luck would seem to have smiled on him as this was during the time that England had a public holiday to celebrate the date. April 23 is now also celebrated as William Shakespeare Day and it’s fitting therefore that it was he who coined the immortal words "Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George" speech from Henry V and a much used saying on St George’s Day.

So let’s all start the trend in celebrating our own National Saint, St George, by flying the flag and having our own St George’s Day parties. At Karnival Costumes, we can help as we have a great selection of St George fancy dress costumes and accessories as well as a great selection of flags, bunting, party goods and tableware.
