Sweeney Todd Costumes

When I was a little boy I hated going to the barbers and I never really understood why.  Well it5 could have been that I’d heard the story of Sweeney Todd the demon barber of Fleet Street and that this had had an impact on me, even at an early age. The horrific goings on that took place at 186 Fleet Street, which is still there today, are the stuff of legends. Said to have been responsible for robbing and murdering over 150 customers, his feats make him the number one serial killer in British history.
Born on 16th October 1756, at number 85 Brick Lane in London's East End, an almost a rural country lane leading out towards the brickfields of Bethnal Green, his life of crime strated almost by accident when he was wrongly accused of stealing a pocket watch. Now, at the age of 14 years he faced a five year term in London’s Newgate Prison. Whilst in prison he met an old barber named Elmer Plummer, who took a liking to the young Sweeney and taught him how to cut hair and shave.  Oh yes, and how to pick pockets of his customers at the same time!
On his release armed with the few pounds he had stolen during his work in the jail and with the  little knowledge of cutting and shaving he had gained, Sweeney Todd opened his infamous Barber Shop at 186 Fleet Street next door to St Dunstan's Church.
In April 1785 a murder of a country gentleman was committed near Fleet Street. Interestingly he was seen arguing with a barber when the barber took a razor and slit the throat of the man. The barber was last seen disappearing into the fog as he ran towards White Friars Street. This was reported in the newspapers and it’s believed that this was the work of Todd.
Inside Sweeney Todd’s barbers shop customers were seated in a revolving chair, that stood in the centre of the small shop and which was over trapdoor that led to a disused cellar. If swung over, the chair would reveal an identical chair that would take its place. The murderous act was committed by tumbling a customer through the trapdoor and then leaving his shop, Todd would finish off the unconscious victim by slitting their throats with his razor. A type and style of razor, which through these acts, became known as a cut throat razor.
With so many bodies to dispose of he was lucky in having a lover who was a pie maker, Margery Lovett, and when they discovered a disused underground tunnel leading from the cellar of Sweeney’s shop, that finished up under Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop, an ideal business partnership was established.
The life and times of Sweeney Todd have been immortalized in articles, books, plays, films and even a musical and nowadays and partly because the story is so gruesome, it makes a fantastic theme for any Halloween costume party.  And at Karnival Costumes we have Sweeney Todd Costumes as well as the accessories to make your Halloween bash, shall we say, a cut above the rest!
With theatrical body parts and plenty of blood fluid we have the resulting carnage from the enterprise sorted and we even have one of Mrs Lovett’s infamous meat pies for you to display – well, it’ll keep the catering bills low!
