Karnifval Costumes blog for The Dahlicious Dress Up Day celebrating the life and works of Roald Dahl. Some dress up ideas for the day.

Clown Logo of Karnival Costumes your Halloween specialists for Fancy Dress and Costume AccessoriesLike so many people around the world, be they young or old, we have enjoyed the wonderful books by Roald Dahl along with their spin-off films and plays and, again like so many, we owe him a debt of gratitude for inspiring our children to become readers that it’s entirely fitting that his birthday, September 13th be declared as ‘Roald Dahl Day’ and in his memory The Dahlicious Dress Up Day is held during the month.

"I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
Roald Dahl

Now being celebrated in more and more schools, Roald Dahl Day provides a wonderful excuse for introducing children of all ages to the wonderful worlds he created with his words. He has become one of the world's most popular children's authors, with over 20 children's books published including the ever popular Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and James and the Giant Peach.

And schools are quickly recognizing the value of inter-active play with more children attending classes dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl costume character. So as well as making the day an excuse (as if you need one) to reread some of his amazing stories, why not see if we can give you the inspiration for your own Roald Dahl character costume from the ideas below and these are also really useful book week costume ideas and suggestions too!

James and The Giant Peach
            Main characters:
James; depicted as wearing a white shirt with a tie and a blazer. Our suggestion would be any of our boy’s evacuee costumes from our historical costume collection but remove any luggage tag labels
The Old Man; a wizard creates the magic that happens. Difficult to make a suggestion here
The Insects; these includes ladybirds, caterpillars, worms and spiders. Check out our collection of children’s instant animal fancy dress for most of these.
Cloud Men; For smaller children, our Cloud Tabard will do fine, for older children you could follow the same style and create your own scaled up version using card and white hair colouring and white Snazaroo face paint.

Matilda
            Main characters:
Matilda; is depicted wearing a blue dress and has brown hair with a red headband. Not much that we can offer here although we do have a selection of children’s wigs which may assist
Mrs Wormwood; a bulky woman with dyed blonde hair and heavily made up. No comments other than some of the padding in our Santa Accessories section or even a muscle shirt might produce the desired result.  Me, oh I’d just eat another couple of sausage rolls and a packet of biscuits!
Miss Trunchbull; as headmistress and bully you simply need a dark business suit and a stern expression with hair tight back into a bun.  Add a school cane for that true bullying look
Amanda Thripp; school uniform and pigtails

The BFG (Big Friendly Giant)
            Main characters:
BFG; in most representations, the character has an off-white shirt (tee-shirt) with a ragged waistcoat, trousers too big and held up by an over-length belt. He also has large ears refined so as to hear the dreams) and a bald head with grey tufts of hair on either side.
Sophie; main characteristic is long blond hair and a simple pink dress. Well, you’ve either got it or you haven’t but no-one will be too fussy about the colour of the hair (surely?)
Queen of England; as befitting any queen, we suggest robes and crown from our collection

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
childrens Willy Wonk costume perfect for The Dahlicious Dress Up Day in petemberMain characters:
Charlie Bucket; depicted as a poor boy from a poor family (er, we’ve slipped into Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody if I’m not mistaken?) anyway, our suggestion is again from our historical costumes for children, only this time try Victorian boy or Urchin costume. And the golden ticket? Using a computer you can create a good representation and Google Images will provide some examples to follow.
Grandpa Joe; aged shirt with frayed collar or better an old shirt with no collar, dark trousers, again better with over-length belt, grey hair or wig and old codgers nose and ear hair
Veruca Salt; depicted as wearing girly clothes with frills and with hair in a bow
Mike Teavee; classic boy in cowboy costume with pistols and holsters
Violet Beauregarde; a gum chewing girl in a track suit who  turns purple which you can too with purple Snazaroo face paint and purple wig
Augustus Gloop; a chubby child which you could create based on one of our muscle chests to add bulk bit you’ll need a little more around the belly area!
Willy Wonka; good news! A fully licensed Wonka costume is available however, you could assemble your own by wearing a top hat and bright clothes with a big flouncy bow tie
Oompa Loompa; again good news! We stock a factory worker costume that is ideal for this character and use orange Snazaroo face paint to complete the look

Fantastic Mr Fox
Main characters:The Fantastic Mr Fox costume perfect for Roald Dahl Day dress-up
Mr Fox; check out our children’s Fox costume
Other Animals; Include badgers, rats, weasels, rabbits, squirrels again check out our collection of children’s animal costumes
Famers; conjure up an image of a cloth flat cap and wearing a tweed waistcoat over a plain shirt with rolled up sleeves

The Giraffe and The Pelly and Me
Burglar costume for kids from Karnival Costumes ideal fancy dress idea for Roald Dahl Day in SeptemberMain characters
Billy; we would suggest an urchin fancy dress or Victorian schoolboy costume (see above)
Animals; characters include a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey, check out our collection of children’s animal costumes
Burglar; our burglar costume for boys will be ideal
Policeman; either our police costume or select from our collection of police costume accessories with plain white shirt and dark trousers

These are just some ideas for the major characters from just some of Roald Dahl’s books and there should be enough ideas here for a few school dress up days. If you want to gain a better understanding of his works and other ideas for celebrating his works, there are plenty of sites on the web including Activity Village which has a number of colouring pages and other activities based on Roald Dahl’s works.

And on a more serious note, we should all support Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity which was founded as the Roald Dahl Foundation in 1991. Since then we have given more than £7 million in funding to help children and young people with serious, rare blood or brain conditions and, until the end of 2008, literacy problems.  It’s this charity that most schools raise money for on this very special day… The Dahlicious Dress Up Day!
