Valentine’s Day Games for Children to Play

It goes without saying that young children may not be ready for the romantic side of Valentine’s Day but with all of the decorations, cards and ballyhoo that appear in shops during the run up to the celebration, they are aware that something big is on the horizon. And they will still enjoy celebrating Valentine's Day. With a few chocolates, some red hearts, and lots of hugs and kisses parents and relatives, they can enjoy this day dedicated to love as much as the adults. If you're planning a Valentine's Day party for children, whether at home or in the classroom, here are some games that will add some extra fun to the celebration.

Guess Who's Cupid
The organiser in charge should secretly choose who will be the first Cupid. This can be done by tapping the child on the head while they all close their eyes. Next all of the players walk around shaking hands with one another. However, the chosen Cupid should gently tickle the palm of the hands that he or she shakes. If you get tickled by Cupid, you need to sit down without alerting others. The remaining players should try to guess who Cupid is before they are tickled too.

Valentine's Day Freeze Dance
Select and play some age appropriate music for the children, ideally songs which include the word love or similar sentiment. The players dance to the tune and just before turning it off, a word related to Valentines is called out. When the music stops, the children should freeze in a shape that is the word or the action implied by the word. For example, your list of words could include: Valentine, cupid, arrow, hug, kiss, heart, secret, gift, etc. The shape is not that important as it’s the players who move during these frozen periods who are eliminated and sit out until there's one winner. An alternative is just to play it for fun with everyone remaining in until they become bored or you run out of words (which usually happens first).

Valentine's Day Hangman
Divide the children into teams and have them compete in a game of Valentine's Hangman where each team takes turns guessing letters. The team that first guesses the word or phrase, when it is their turn, is declared the winner. For younger children you can use the same word list developed for the Valentine’s Day Freeze Dance game above. For older kids and teenagers, you can make phrases such as "Be My Valentine", or even have them guess the names of famous celebrity couples in real life or movies such as "Troy and Gabriella" from High School Musical you can extend this to adults and use older expressions like, Anthony and Cleopatra or Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor etc.

Valentine’s Balloon Pop
To play this game you will need to divide the players into two teams. One team will be called the pink team and the other will be the red team. For each team, write down a Valentines expression which comprises of a number of words and this should be displayed as large as possible. Then rewrite each word from the selected song lyrics onto equally sized, small pieces of paper. Fold these papers and insert each of the words for the pink team’s lyric in a pink balloon and inflate. Then do the same for the red team’s words, using a red balloon.

The inflated balloons should then be placed in the middle of each playing area and then have one player from each team burst them at the same time. Once they have collected their words, they should be arranged on a table or on the floor in the same order as the saying or expression that you have used. The first team to complete this task wins.

Don't Make Me Laugh
Sit the players in a circle and choose one person to be "it" for the first round. Have that person walk around the others blowing dramatic kisses at the other children trying to make them laugh. As the other players laugh, they leave the circle. The winner is the last person left with a straight face and if the game is to continue, they become the next "it."

Now we just love the idea of spending some time with family and friends around Valentine’s Day and we think that these games and ideas will help to pass the time with joy and happiness.
