Each year on various dates depending on where you happen to be in the world, people join together and wear all sorts of zany and serious hats and headwear in-order to raise cash which goes towards the fight against the devastating impact of brain tumours.
Wear a Hat Day was the creation of the Brain Tumour Research group of charities in the UK who created the concept in 2008 and organised the first event in 2010.  From the outset, the public warmed to the idea as well as the aims of the appeal and it has quickly become part of the accepted charitable events calendar.
In the UK, Wear a Hat day is held in March and the power of the hat should not be underestimated as in 2014 this single event funded the entire research team for 20 days across all of its research centres. Funds are urgently needed to advance the research, identify the causes, advance the right treatments and ultimately find a cure for brain tumours.
The Serious Side of Wear a Hat Day
And taking a look at some of the facts unearthed by the Brain Tumour Research it’s clear that we still have a way to go in beating this killer with the statistics speaking for themselves. Something has to be done.
  • Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer and five-year survival remains low at just 19.8%.
  • More children and adults under 40 die of a brain tumour than from any other cancer
  • 71% of brain tumour deaths occur in those under 75 compared to 47% for all other cancers
  • Brain tumours receive just 1% of the national spend on cancer research
  • 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour
  • Up to 40% of all cancers eventually spread to the brain
  • Patient personality changes that can occur as a result of a brain tumour cause massive family disruption
Karnival Costumes will Pledge 10p from EVERY Hat sold EVERY MARCH
