When we were small, back in the sixties there were really only two types of costumes on the market, for girls there were nurses’ outfits whilst for boys there was the staple Cowboy or Indian fancy dress. And although many years have past and we’ve enjoyed watching an explosion of costume styles and waiting with anticipation every new movie release to see what new range of branded and licensed merchandise it will herald, there remains something everlasting about the less talked about, but still family favourite wild west fancy dress costume.

One of the major changes is the fact that it’s not now just children who enjoy wearing fancy dress.  Although some try to keep it secret, the majority of adults now also yearn to don a costume.  Perhaps this is pure escapism but it contrasts strongly with the era that I grew up in, that where my parents thought that wearing a paper hat at Christmas was the equivalent of a full fancy dress outfit today.  That said it did always lead to a complete change in their behaviour although I still think that this was due more to the wine on the table and the Drambuie that followed the pudding.  But I could be mistaken it could have been the hats!

Well after that digression we’d better return to topic. Wild West costumes are not now just for kids, there are outfits for all ages and tastes and there are probably just as many for girls and women as there are for the male of the species!  And joining this massive wardrobe of Cowboys and Indians costumes there is a huge selection of Wild West themed party decorations and tableware.

So if you’re sold on the idea of staging your own ho down then let’s get a hustlin’ and a rustlin’ and get you talking just like they would back in the ol’ time America that you’ll be looking to recreate.   First we’ll look at some funny sayings that have been attributed to cowboys, albeit that they actually stand the test of time and still make sense today; so thanks to those good folks at Your Dictionary for these examples;
  • Always drink upstream from the herd.
  • Any cowboy can carry a tune. The trouble comes when he tries to unload it.
  • Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think.
  • Generally, you ain't learnin' nothing when your mouth's a-jawin'.
  • If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.
  • If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.
  • It's better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid than open it and prove it.
  • If it doesn't seem to be worth the effort it probably isn't.
  • Just 'cos trouble comes visiting doesn't mean you have to offer it a place to sit down.
  • Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back.
  • The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back into your pocket.
  • When you give a lesson in meanness to a critter or a person, don't be surprised if they learn their lesson.
  • When you're throwin' your weight around, be ready to have it thrown around by somebody else.
  • We all got pieces of crazy in us, some bigger pieces than others.
And if tossing in the odd funny phrase doesn’t win you your spurs here’s a few commonly used cowboy terms which should convince everyone around that you’re the real McCoy and not just a wannabe in a cowboy Costume!
