Thanksgiving is a national holiday in Canada and the US and is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.  In North America, the holiday gives people a chance to travel to see family and friends or to host family and friends with a special meal at some point over the three-day weekend. They also like to take short vacation or sightseeing breaks whilst still celebrating the harvest just gathered. In the US, traditional foods are a massive part of Thanksgiving celebrations and many families include the entire family in the food preparation. Traditional foods include turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Even now, giving thanks is a part of the holiday and although it’s less about offering thanks for the blessing of the harvest, some people still maintain the essence of the blessing by telling their loved ones why they are thankful this year.  The passing of Thanksgiving heralds the start of the Christmas shopping season and the day after it is now known as Black Friday, on which day retailers make many special offers and open very early which fuels and adds to the overall excitement of the holiday.
